To make the sea water drinkable, it is crucial to remove the dissolved salts, purify and remineralize the water before storage and distribution (Mehta, Gupta & Dhingra, 2014. In the first stage, there is seawater intake from the sea and into the pre-treatment filters to remove solids and sediments. The filter backwash is returned to the sea while the cleaner water goes to another chamber where the water is forced through fine membranes at high pressure, and the fresh water then passes through and the sea concentrate is returned to the sea. The process of the water passing through the fine membrane is important as the water molecules pass and impurities are removed. The desalinated water no longer has salts and minerals. After filtration, there is post treatment with lime to remineralize the water, while chlorine and fluoride are added and they must meet the health guidelines and requirements to be safe drinking water. The last phase is storage of the treated water before distribution.
