The Risk Factors for Osteoporosis
According to Pouresmaeili et al. (2018), osteoporosis is a skeletal system disorder characterized by remarkable deterioration in bone material mass and subsequent bone structural disruption, impacting millions of individuals from diverse ethnic groups globally. Skeletal tissue loss, happening progressively as the individual ages, is a natural biological process linked to deterioration in the body’s metabolic processes. Research indicates that bone formation and resorption imbalance could be augmented by specific risk factors, both non-modifiable and modifiable (Pouresmaeili et al., 2018; Tanski et al., 2021). Non-modifiable risk factors account for most osteoporosis cases, including but not limited to the delicate constitution, advanced age, poor health, female sex, dementia, familial predisposition, history of adulthood fractures, and Caucasian race. Possibly modifiable risk factors for the illness include inadequate sun exposure, vitamin D deficiency, high-protein diet or protein deficiency, smoking, excessive or low phosphorus intake, alcohol consumption, low calcium nutrition, lack of mobility or sedentary lifestyle, and excessive coffee consumption (Tanski et al., 2021).
