1 What does it mean if someone has “co-occurring disorders”?
Someone with co-occurring disorders has at least one metal health problem and one substance use problem. In other words, it is a combination of substance-use and mental disorders. Patients with co-occurring disorders essentially have more disorders relating to the use of alcohol and other drugs (Abram, & Teplin, 1991).
