IOM Report Review: The Future of Nursing
The Future of Nursing is the outcome of deliberation from the Institute of Medicine US (2010) that sought to explore the fundamental role of nurses in the ever-evolving health care systems. Considering their prominence in the healthcare system, not to mention their integral role in the delivery of health care, the committee made some meaningful observations to form the basis of the recommendation from the discussion. The committee established that nurses should have autonomy on their skillsets and training (Institute of Medicine US, 2010 p.S-4). Allowing nurses to exploit their skills and training by eliminating barriers to their scope increases efficiency in health care. Deliberation number two concluded that nurses should have access to improved education systems to allow seamless academic progression (Institute of Medicine US, 2010 p.S-5). The technical and cognitive demands for the nursing profession inhibit the delivery of service in health care where there is a shortage of adequate skillsets, and an improved educational system serves the purposes of addressing such demands.
To realize full redesigning of the healthcare system, the committee recognized the need to have nurses partner with physicians and other healthcare professionals (Institute of Medicine US, 2010 p.S-6). The partnership opens doors for nurses to take roles in leadership positions and increases their accountability in the commitment to deliver high-quality care. The other key message from the committee is the need to have a top-notch data collection and information infrastructure to streamline planning and policymaking (Institute of Medicine US, 2010 p.S-7). Data remains the most important commodity of the current era of information. An effective data collection and analysis in the health care system bolster the decision-making process and ensure maximum exploitation of the scope of the healthcare professionals.
The US Institute of Medicine report had a myriad of recommendations directed to the various key players in the healthcare industry. Among the recommendations were to equip up to 80 percent of the nurses with a baccalaureate degree and double the number of nurses with a doctorate (Institute of Medicine US, 2010). These recommendations touched directly on the education of the nurses. As a result, there is an increased number of nurses graduating with degrees annually. A larger number of employers have encouraged the nurses to pursue the BSN degree by offering tuition reimbursement (Buerhaus et al., 2017). Also, the level of interdisciplinary collaboration in healthcare has increased tremendously, with nurses being at the forefront of the collaborative efforts in the healthcare industry (Tierney et al., 2020). The recommendation by the IOM report to eliminate barriers to the scope of nursing practices has enabled the BSN-prepared nurses to put their skillsets and technical abilities into good use where they were initially bound not to operate. The improved education system has also offered the BSN-p...
