Psychotherapy at a Distance
One of the databases I came across in our university library portal was psychiatry online. The database hosts many indispensable psychiatry resources such as DSM-5 and other premium journals and books. It also has podcasts, books, news, APA guidelines, discussion forums on trending topics in the subject area, among other features. As a psychiatric nurse, I find the resources available in this database to be indispensable for my practice and study. The database is also easily navigable: from the psychiatry online website homepage, users can access journals, books, podcasts, news, and other psychiatry related resources. Under journals, one of the subscriptions is to the American Journal of Psychiatry. As I navigated this journal publisher, I came across an article by Markowitz on psychotherapy during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Difficulties experienced when searching for the article
One of the challenges I had is the number of steps any user has to take eventually access the article. The problem is because you have to secure a login through the university library portal. As a user, you have to go through a series of hyperlinks to access the journal eventually. While exploring the databases found through our library website, I took an interest in finding articles on psychiatry during the ongoing pandemic. To find the article by CITATION Joh20 \l 1033 (Markowitz, et al., 2020) on the topic, the user would have to login into the library, find the online psychiatry database, which directs the user to the online psychiatry homepage. The user then uses the search feature on the website or go to the specific journal subscription. The steps will need at least five steps to access the journal in HTML or pdf. All these steps are tedious, and there is no clear guideline on how to use each of the databases.
The usefulness of the article
CITATION Joh20 \l 1033 (Markowitz, et al., 2020) a journal article titled, Psychotherapy at a distance reviewed the limited clinical evidence supporting different modes of telepsychotherapy, then focused on how remote therapy affects clinicians and their patients. Through the ministry of health, the government has issued guidelines on protecting oneself and others during the pandemic. The nature of the guidelines contradicts how to offer psychotherapy. The authors explore how the pandemic has changed psychotherapy and the efficacy of providing services through telephone and or the internet. The article also discusses how these challenges affect the patient's treatment and how they can be navigated.
