Narcotics Anonymous Session Experience
Recovery processes from substance use disorder, such as narcotics addiction, are unique across different individuals. Consequently, Dekkers, Vos, and Vanderplasschen (2020) contend that there is a great variety in possible pathways to recovery underpinned by a range of treatment and support options. Attending Narcotics Anonymous (NA) group sessions is an effective option that falls within this range. In this regard, the purpose of the current paper is to report on an NA session that I attended as an observer. Often, such meetings are open to non-addicts whose participation is limited to observation to provide an inclusive and tolerant recovery environment for narcotics addicts.
Session Descriptions
The session attended was called Sunrise Serenity, hosted in the Beach Azalea Terrace, 1166 S Surf Rd, Hollywood, Florida. The one-hour session was to begin at 8.00 AM, but because of some reasons that are not yet apparent, it began at 9.00 and ended at 10.00 AM. The session consisted of a leader and eight members. Three of the members were women under the age of 25 years, while the rest were men with an estimated age range of 20 to 50 years. Four members were people of color (African Americans and Mexican Americans), while the rest were White Americans. Out of the 8, only one indicated not being a parent. Here, the members' objective was to achieve the common goal of recovery from addiction. The group's mission is to assist each other in a recovery journey described as challenging by the group leader. According to the group leader, Sunrise Serenity is part of the more prominent Narcotics Anonymous (NA), a non-profit international organization focusing on recovering addicts through group therapies. Consequently, the only requirement for participation in group sessions or membership is the “desire to stop using” (SAANA, 2022). This session was chosen because of its proximity and focus on narcotics (instead of alcohol) as part of my learning experience.
Session Objective Impression
An accurate impression is a description of an experience or phenomenon through opinions shaped by facts and actual events or outcomes without the interference of personal feelings or biases. Going by this definition, three critical aspects of the session stood out for me. Firstly, there is the aspect of the organization. This was apparent in how the room was organized: chairs were arranged in a full circle in the neat room with coffee jars and mugs in one corner. The room had four windows open which allowed the free circulation of air. The room was also away from the main road, which implied little or no noise interference from the outside world. The group leader welcomed each member with a firm hand shape and a few necessities, which indicated an aura of friendliness. Further, a book text for new members (especially observers) highlighted the group's core values and ideals. The walls were also lined with charts, one of which indicated the commonly used terms unique to the session or group processes.
