Reflection on "Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health"

Nursing is an ever-growing and hence dynamic field. The IOM report provides a clear breakdown on how the future of nursing will be punctuated by advancements as well as holistic changes in the entire field of nursing. With the changes in the field and practice environments, there is also a corresponding need to have certain changes in the way nursing education is done. With all these in mind therefore, the importance of nursing education becomes even clearer than before. It also clearly stamps up and matches my overall educational goals, not only at present, but also in the future.
With a minimum BSN, there are so many options in the job market. It is quite good that the IOM report is planning to increase the number of baccalaureate nurses to 80% by the time the year 2020 comes knocking. In addition, it also advocates for nurses to take up leadership positions and also be partners in the greater healthcare system (Glazer & Fitzpatrick, 2012). Such provisions open up a world of opportunities and possibilities even for me. There will be a greater need for nurses who are focused and qualified in implementing the transition to a better outcome, from caregiving, the use of IT, to even skills development. I believe with my current skillset, I will take up any of these positions, while also learning further at it.
When it comes to achieving higher levels of education, the IOM report is quite clear that the fundamental goal is to meet patients’ needs while also providing the nurses with the space and opportunity to be leaders in their respective positions, as well as advance in scientific knowledge (Friberg & Creasia, 2019). In order to however, work hand in hand with other providers and professionals from various other fields, there is a need to equip nurses with the required skillset too. This is through the pursuit of higher education, so as to remain on toes with the changing dynamics of the field.
My plans for further advancement will be outlined over a 4 year period, in which I would like to pursue an MSN. This is because, an MSN provides a further and higher level of nursing practice. It also provides an individual with the relevant and much-needed technical ability to integrate with other related sciences, with the end goal of achieving advanced healthcare delivery to various portions of the population. An MSN also introduces healthcare informatics and advocacy; an important skill when it comes to the aforementioned interproffesional coordination. It is therefore my belief, which I will be on course within the next 2 to 4 years, on my journey towards achieving this.
