Strategies for Implementation of Nursing Theory
In nursing, one of the most challenging aspects is implementing nursing theory as a framework to achieve high quality practice. Integrating theory in practice helps in realizing evidence-based practice and improves healthcare outcomes and promotes patient care and safety. As such, professional nurses are constantly looking for strategies that can help them in achieving evidence-based practice guided by theory and creating a nursing environment supported by current scientific evidence. One of the most effective strategies that they can use is an approach of six systematic steps.
First step; Conducting a Focus Group
The first step should be inviting nurses in direct-care and leadership roles to attend a session for group discussion, which could last up to four hours. The participants should then be informed of the need to select and integrate an evidence-based model (nursing theory) that is in line with the vision and mission of the healthcare facility (Grol & Wensing, 2020). The theory should also be supported by the facility’s care model. Before conducting the focus group, the leaders should introduce the participants to evidence-based practice and care.
During the session, participants should be presented with various evidence-informed practice models which could help the facility in realizing its vision and mission statements by acting as the blueprint (Crowell & Boynton, 2020). It is expected that the models could contain different elements, but the purpose of the nurses should be to select a nursing theory that translates evidence into practice to improve healthcare outcomes and promote patient safety.
Second Step; Selecting a Nursing Theory Model
Once all the models have been overviewed and their positive and negative characteristics discussed, the participants should be asked to evaluate the models by using various such attributes as shown below;
Ease of integration and understanding.
Intuitiveness.
Alignment with the facility’s patient-care and delivery model (Portney, 2020).
Alignment with the facility’s mission and vision statements, and philosophy of practice.
Requirements for effective evidence rating.
This helps the facility to better understand the nursing theory before integrating it into its practice and influence its practice quality and measures.
Third Step; Communicating
Once the nursing theory has been evaluated and selected, presentations should be made to the leadership groups in charge of patient care and also the practice councils in nursing care (Hamilton, 2020).
