Protection of Human Rights
The study by Pace et al. (2012) did not require any human participants as subjects of the study because the main focus was on testing the reliability of the Mixed Method Appraisal Tool (MMAT). The only participants in the study are the reviewers, who were not subjected to any harm since they are willing participants. There is no indication that the study was approved by an ethics review board.
Research Design
Comparisons were made before and after the discussions between the reviewers to determine the reliability of the MMAT. This is relevant in a study to facilitate interpretation of findings, as opined by Polit and Beck (2012). However, it is not clear which research design was adopted in the study; neither is the minimization of biases demonstrated.
Population and Sample
The study population in the study by Pace et al. (2012) included all Participatory Research (PR) evaluation studies, and 32 PR studies were selected as the study’s sample. Polit and Beck (2012) opine that the population and the sample used in a quantitative study should be clearly described. Further, any sampling biases should be effectively minimized, and it is not clear in the study by Pace et al. (2012) how sampling bias was minimized. It is also not clear what sampling design was adopted in the study or how the researchers settled on the sample size. A power analysis was not used in the estimation of the needs of the sample size. Power analysis is an important aspect of sample size determination, as recommended by Polit and Beck (2012).
Data Collection and Measurement
Details about data measurement scales are thoroughly provided in the study. The researchers collected data from the reviewers' pre and post discussion to determine the efficiency of the MMAT. A pilot study was first conducted before the actual data was collected to determine the validity and reliability of the measures. As noted by Polit and Beck (2012), it is important to indicate the reliability and validity of measure in a quantitative study. The evidence of the reliability and validity of the measures came from the research itself through the pilot study, which provided the researcher an opportunity to make some improvements on the MMAT.
Procedures
The intervention considered in the study by Pace et al. (2012) was the discussion between the reviewers and data was collected pre and post discussion. However, the intervention is not thoroughly described, as recommended by Polit and Beck (2012). Further, every reviewer was involved in the discussion, and their responses were calculated using SPSS’s kappa statistic to determine their level of agreement on the reliability and efficiency of the tool.
