Identifying and Reporting Privacy Violation HIPAA is an acronym for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, which is a law in the US designed to provide privacy standards to protect patients' medical records and other health information provided to health plans, doctors, hospitals and other health care providers. There are two types of violations and these include, deliberate violation and unintentional violation (Berwick & Gaines, 2018). A deliberate violation is one done intentionally by a health professional knowing very well what consequences may follow after his or her actions. Unintentional violations are those that happen as a result of a security breach of patient data or theft of records. A professional in a healthcare office would be impacted by committing a HIPAA violation if he or she discloses or shares confidential health records of a patient either intentionally or as a result of negligence.
