According to Becker’s Hospital Review (2012), strategic planning involves crafting a plan to achieve desired results after determining the answers to two questions. The two questions are “How much?” And “By when?”. The healthcare environment is changing too rapidly for strategic planning, and often experience barrier when addressing these two questions (Knight, 2014). The unit size, complexity and difference in the service provision determines the organizational level at which the strategic planning process is relevant (Perera et al., 2012). Alarmingly, most healthcare organizations fail to implement and adapt to their strategic plans, because of various reasons discussed in this essay.
One of the barriers in strategic planning adaptability is the insufficient monitoring of the domestic supervisor. Health organizations fail to provide supervisors with the ability to process and implement strategic planning. Most programs do not relate directly to the employees’ job descriptions and units, and the work processes (Lavinsky, 2013). Therefore, employees view strategic planning processes as additional duties, thus lower rates of implementation or adaptability. Alternatively, the lack of specific awareness and knowledge of employees about their mission in implementing programs and the lack of communication on strategic plans is an obstacle in implementing strategies (Lavinsky, 2013). Employees should be aware of the strategic objectives and also have a chance to air out their views and feelings about strategic plans. In doing so, the management and employees can communicate freely and effectively during the strategic planning process and even implement them.
Lack of adequate role of administrators in formulating the plans, and lack of unity among decision-makers at the time of programming causes the poor implementation of strategic objectives. When the decision-makers and administrators fail to partake in their roles, there arises a lack of appropriate communication, inadequate coordination, unclear regulatory policies, uncertainty and, lack of adequate information systems.
