Each phase of pregnancy (and even prior to pregnancy) requires specific nutritional needs and care for both the mother and unborn child, yet for women who are incarcerated there is access to appropriate care. Correctional nurses have a more prominent role to play to improve outcomes for pregnant mothers. Prison conditions are not conducive and there are many restrictions on incarcerated mothers. Advocating for expectant mothers who are incarcerated has not received much attention as other health issues (Ferszt, Hickey & Seleyman, 2013. There is a need to change and health practice where mothers in prisons get better health and Kurt Lewin’s Theory of Planned Change is a useful model of change.
Kurt Lewin Model defines change as a modification of the forces that maintain the behavior in a stable system. There are two types of forces that influence change the driving (helping forces) or restraining (hindering forces) movement toward a goal (Shirey, 2013). To Lewin, behavioral change is the result of a set of forces within a system and a group of people can influence the changes in behavior among its members and this implies that it is possible to plan for change and ensure changes are implemented successfully. To ensure patient advocacy is successful, raising awareness among stakeholders and facilitating changes requires liaising with the staff, administrator, parenting coordinators, healthcare providers, and social workers to improve outcomes.
