Literature Review on Osteoarthritis: Most Common Disease

Essay Instructions:

Literature Review Each learner must prepare a literature review in relation to the chosen PICOT that will serve as the literary basis for the Practice Proposal. This is an opportunity to read as a scholar and develop competence in analyzing the key elements of a research article and review outcomes that reflect a heuristic process. The learner should select 2 research reports from the literature search that was conducted to justify the PICOT. Next analyze both manuscripts to consider how the purpose, methodology, results, and discussion support how your research question will add knowledge to the nursing practice. Last, write a short paper (3-5 pages in total). Include a complete citation for each manuscript. See rubric to review points that faculty will use to grade the assignment.
LITERATURE REVIEW RUBRIC

FYI: This literature Review is base on the nursing research question PICOT (“For geriatric patients of 55 years and beyond admitted with osteoarthritis [OA], does the use of hip and leg strengthening exercises programs together with pharmacotherapy, compared to the use of pharmacotherapy alone, improve in the management of OA by relieving pain, contraction and stiffness, during three months of rehabilitation?”

Literature Review
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common disease affecting joints; the disease occurs among 80 percent of people over 55 years of age (Bhatia, Bejarano, & Novo, 2013). OA is the main reason for older adults requiring regular medical care. The number of people over 65 years is increasing hence the increase in OA prevalence being reported. There is the need to develop treatment strategies that involves understanding the physiology of the joint disease based on different age ranges and different population needs (Palo et al., 2015).
Introduction
Different exercise and treatment programs have been initiated both pharmacological and non-pharmacological to increase functional independence and reduce cost related to treatment and management of knee Osteoarthritis in India. Research studies advocate for both hip and leg strengthening exercises as part of the patients’ treatment plan combined with pharmacotherapy for patients with knee OA.
The two selected articles by Palo, N., Chandel, S.S., Dash, S., Arora, G., Kumar, M.,& Biswal, M.R. (2015 and Bhatia, D., Bejarano, T., & Novo, M. (2013) highlight various concerns about OA and the reasons for high incidences in India. The articles also highlight why India is the focus because of its high population.
The articles presents future projection of the disease, including the financial implications stating that by 2050, India population will be at 323 million that is greater than the total US population by 2012 (Palo et al., 2015). The financial expenditure for caring for OA is at $ 15.5 – 28.6 billion annually, making the most expensive disease to manage.
The key search terms include, Osteoarthritis, Knee, screening, Indian, Osteoarthritis index scale, arthrocentesis, hydrotherapy, musculoskeletal disorders, neuromuscular efficiency,
The need for this research question
There is a need to analyze the different exercise protocols both pharmacological and non-pharmacological to identify the best approach to reducing pain, increase knee functioning and minimize cost related to managing OA within three months during the rehabilitation process. The research studies presented in the literature highlights screening protocols, and compares rehabilitation center clinician-directed program versus a home-directed individual program to identify the best rehabilitation or treatment strategies to be applied for treating of knee OA.
The fact that incidences and prevalence of knee OA have been reported to increase by 10 times among people between 30 to 65 years compared to the younger population (Bhatia, Bejarano, & Novo, 2013).
The alarming trends of OA are evident in several studies. With the high prevalence of OA, there is need to review if hip and leg strengthening exercise program combined with pharmacotherapy as compare to using pharmacotherapy alone among geriatric patient above 55 admitted with OA can improve OA management within the three months of rehabilitation.
Clinical Question
In the first article, the clinical question is whether a multi-center screening and therapeutic process can improve the quality of life, health status, walking ability among people livin...
