Status and Progress of the Practicum Project
Several weeks ago, I began working on my nursing practicum project and identified dysphagia screening among stroke patients as a quality improvement area that could help prevent aspirational pneumonia in stroke patients. I did preliminary research on the subject and identified key stakeholders to work with to facilitate the successful implementation of the project. Below is a breakdown of the current status of the project and its objectives, the progress, and any other additional information about the practicum plan.
Scope and Purpose of the Practicum Project
The practicum project’s main focus is on early dysphagia screening in newly diagnosed stroke patients. Dysphagia is a common condition among stroke patients and contributes to the risk of stroke patients developing aspiration pneumonia. However, if aspiration pneumonia can be detected early, the risk of developing pulmonary complications can be reduced significantly (Sivertsen et al., 2017; Palli et al., 2017). Thus, the purpose of this project is to investigate whether early dysphagia screening among newly diagnosed stroke patients helps in reducing the risk of aspiration pneumonia.
Status of Project Objectives
I developed four key objectives for this practicum project namely:
* Developing a process improvement proposal about early dysphagia screening for presentation to key stakeholders
* Developing a pre/post-test evaluation tool to gather information about early dysphagia screening
* Creating a patient education program about dysphagia screening and dysphagia prevention interventions for patients to enhance patient adherence to dysphagia recommendations
* Creating and delivering training to nurses about dysphagia screening among stroke patients to ensure this is a common practice in their patient care routine
