Woterwolfs reflection on lament the son
In this novel, Wolterstorff writes about various events in his life that followed after the loss of his son in a mountain climbing accident. He is a strong Christian and therefore, the biblical teachings expects him not to grief his son with the hope of resurrection. However, he is only human and goes through grief and denial hoping that God would bring back his son. Therefore, he goes through moments of grief in his life that are accompanied by the joy of meeting his son someday in the future. The author's faith in God becomes strong after the son's death (Wolterstorff, 1987). As a result, this helps him a lot in overcoming his grief. He urges Christians to be strong in their faith especially when they have lost a loved one.
Kubler Ross's five stages of grief
The author goes through anger after getting that news that his son had passed away. Just like other human beings, such news is a cause of grief and devastation in someone's life. Wolterstorff shows the bargaining stage of grief by expressing his feelings towards God as to why he cannot see his son immediately. He finds it difficult to believe in resurrection in an unknown date and, hence, wonders why the resurrection cannot be done immediately. This would heal his sorrow, but he also has to deal with the fact that his son cannot be brought back to life as soon as he wishes. Kobler describes bargaining as a situation whereby a person has to deal with an impossibility. In this case, Wolterworffs is faced with the challenge of accepting the fact that his son will only be brought back during the day of resurrection. In addition, he is faced with moments of depression and his belief in God enables him to accept what had happened.
How Wolterstorff finds joy
The author describes the pain that he was going through after the loss of his son hoping that God could bring him back to life to end his grief. Joy is something that Wolterstorff is able to experience in conjunction with his grief because he believes in the Christian teachings of resurrection. The pain that he is feeling is a reflection of the fact that he still respects the hole that his son left in his life. He says that the hope of resurrection and the trust he had in God enabled him to overcome his grief and experience joy. Therefore, as time passes by, the author finds joy in life again with the memories of son fading away slowly.
