Introduction
The healthcare sector is usually an intricate system that depends on the smooth running of all its elements. In other terms, it is a sum of its parts and therefore, any glitch in one part messes up the whole system. One of the most crucial factors is availability of qualified physicians. The Mississippi delta area is one of the rural areas that have been hit by an acute shortage of physicians and registered nurses for a long time. Despite efforts to counter this shortfall, many setbacks still hinder the medical sector in the region, thus making it remain medically understaffed.
Explanation for why the shortage exists in Mississippi delta area.
The shortage is as a result of a few factors. First is the relatively less goodwill from the authorities when it comes to fully supporting the medical cause in the state. The area is quite economically disadvantaged in the country compared to other states such as New York. This means that there is less circulation of cash, less ability to purchase or even acquire medical equipment and therefore lesser ability to deliver on the desired health outcomes. Whenever there is an undersupply of essential hospital equipment or supplies, it becomes quite demoralizing for the medics; something that can even result in a high turnover of medical professionals from the state. According to Rubel, Kee and Kimi (2020), medical professionals often lose motivation when there are so many bottlenecks in their line of work. Secondly, the shortage is caused by medics who leave the state for greener pastures in other states that offer a higher pay package that Mississippi cannot provide.Third, the Mississippi Delta area has very few medical training institutions; thus, there are few trainee doctors. Burnout, exhaustion, and overworking are other problems that make physicians run away from rural areas (Azevedo, 2015).
Explanation of how the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) addresses the shortage of physicians and registered nurses.
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) has tried putting up measures to reduce the deficit. For example, through beneficiary access to physician care and other medical services program, the act has made it possible t...
