Girl Facing the Dilemma of Accepting a Heart Transplant
Question 1
The case involved Hanna Jones, an underage girl facing the dilemma of accepting a heart transplant accompanied by drug therapy whose downside would trigger a return of leukemia she had combatted earlier. She chose to object to the transplant despite the pressure to accept it. My response supported respecting her wish, which received backing from 79% of other individuals.
My response followed the rationale that undergoing the heart transplant would reignite a similarly life-threatening disease. As a result, it was critical to ensure that the healthcare providers respect the patient’s decision. Moreover, Varkey (2021) indicates that the case reflects the principle of autonomy that calls for self-determination since every person has rational decision-making power and utilitarianism theory.
Question 2
A local NHS Trust denied a childless Berkshire couple payments for In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) because they fell outside the age bracket established by their guidelines. However, the couple remains within the national age range of applicability since the woman was 37 while the cap age cap is 39. I sided with the couple’s wishes, like 50% of others.
My answer emerged from the common understanding that healthcare providers should not ration services and that they should desist from discriminatory practices. The case triggers the ethical principle of justice that promotes equitable treatment (Varkey, 2021). Rodger and Blackshaw (2017) also involve deontology theory because offering the service is intrinsically good for the couple
Question 3
The healthcare providers devised a cunning approach for forcing a pregnant woman with pre-eclampsia to undergo a cesarian operation in 1966. They overlooked her wishes and decision for a natural birth because they thought it was an emergency. My response supported the women’s wishes and received support from 39% of individuals.
The rationale supporting this view was that every sound-minded person has a right to make decisions about medical processes. They can accept or object, and the healthcare providers should respect as provided by the autonomy principle (Varkey, 2021). The process also reflects the utilitarianism theory because despite the actions being illegal, they advance a utility perspectiv...
