People in the United States vary widely in their acceptance of the sexual and gender choices and orientations. The impact of those with views of lesser acceptance is felt the hardest by the most vulnerable among us- our children.
Watch the following video of a Ft. Worth City Councilman speaking about his experiences as a young man marginalized based on his sexual orientation and consider the impact such a message would have on a young person in a similar situation and on an adult who is intolerant of the LGBTQ community.

Compare and contrast what you believe the experiences of these two individuals (the insecure LGBTQ youth and the intolerant adult) viewing this message would be. How might it reinforce existing beliefs about themselves or motivate them to see themselves and/or the world differently? What additional information would you propose to share with either or both of these individuals to persuade them into such a paradigm shift?

Increasingly, there has been a focus on non-discrimination policies to support LGBTQ rights and equality, but the LGBTQ youth are one of the groups at high risk of self-harm and suicide. Harassment and violence against the LGBTQ youth is a concern even as some states have recognized civil unions and non-discrimination policies to protect the LGBTQ community. The lack of LGBTQ diversity and inclusion makes it more difficult to promote LGBTQ equality and deal with discrimination against the LGBTQ community. The insecure LGBTQ youths and intolerant adults, have different perspectives on promoting LGBTQ rights protection as such adults are unsympathetic to the LGBTQ community.
For the insecure LGBTQ youth, there is likely to be feelings of guilt and shame, as they are not readily accepted in society, they are discriminated against and socially excluded. Being oneself as an insecure LGBTQ youth may draw much attention to the individual. Discrimination and violence due to prejudice are some of the factors affecting how the youth live their lives. However, the insecure youth are also not confident to live as they wish as they have an internalized negative view about their lives and themselves. The insecure LGBTQ youth and intolerant adults both believe that everyone has a right to live as they wish. The adults do nothing when they are informed that the LGBTQ youths are targeted and intimidated (Mayers, 2018). For centuries, religious morals have dominated various aspects of life, and for the intolerant adult, the LGBTQ youth make choices that they do not approve of. As such, when the LGBTQ youth claim they have experienced discrimination and stigma the adults are indifferent to the youth’s harassment and bullying and even shame them. The socially accepted behavior patterns for male and female youth also mean that the intolerant adults are not keen on accepting diverse sexual and gender identity.
A change in people’s perceptions and adoption of policies that prevent and limit discrimination against the LGBT would be beneficial to improve the lived experiences of the LGBTQ community. Stopping bullying and harassment in schools is necessary that the youths feel welcome and not feeling worthless. Education stakeholders need to commit to adopting changes and there is a need to raise awareness on the resources available for the LGBTQ community.
