Key Messages
The institute of medicine report is one of the most comprehensive reports that dissected the role of stakeholders in the American healthcare industry, basing their recommendations on future needs of the industry. It was essential to have this kind of debate for the sector to grow uniformly and bridge the gap between the industry demands and supply. Nurses were the central stakeholders of discussion, although their representation was low. Their inclusion was critical because they are the receiving line in the sector, and their population surpasses the physicians and other stakeholders. The stakeholders could only understand the needs of the sector if they engaged with the nurses because they primarily interact with patients before they are checked and serviced by physicians. If the growth of the sector was to be realized, nurses had to be fully utilized without breaching their professional ethics and responsibility. The four main messages in the report included how nurses could utilize the full extent of their academic knowledge and training and how nurses should strive to get higher academic qualifications by restructuring the education sector. Further, it also includes how nurses should be treated as equal partners with other healthcare professionals, and how better workforce planning and data collection methods can improve the information collection structure and storage. All these messages were critical, and they drove towards the point of building the trust between stakeholders and enhancing service delivery to patients that access both private and public healthcare services (IOM, 2011). After the passing of the Affordable Care Act, it was critical to assess all the fundamental parameters in the sectors so as to realize a seamless overhaul of the vital industry in the economy.
Report Influence
From the key messages and recommendations of the report, it was evident that nurses were the only stakeholders that could significantly propel and maintain the progress in the sector. Before the announcement, nurses only practiced within their areas of study, and they had no authorization to shift their practice unless they started new courses. However, the state restrictions were reduced, and nurses could practice outside their scope of the study. The number of states that allow their nurses' full practice has increased and surpassed the number of countries that restrict the practice. Supervision and delegation have been reduced, and nurses within states that allow full training can experiment on a variety of practices. This freedom has motivated the increase in the number of nurses pursuing higher education and reduced the inequalities within healthcare professions. There has been a sharp increase in nurses who have attained baccalaureate completion since 2010, attributed to the low entry-level baccalaureate requirements that were implemented from IOM recommendations. The number of new nurses in the sector rose sharply, leading to the central message of expanding the nursing profession to boost the healthcare sector.
