Create an informational presentation of these ten strategies. For each strategy, discuss three actions that you could take as a school health professional.

1. Coordinate and integrate school health-related programs across state agencies and with nongovernmental organizations (e.g., program coordination, align priorities and outcomes, encourage interagency work).
2. Use state and local data to guide decision-making and policy formulation (e.g., data collection in schools determines policy and allocated resources to address childhood obesity).
3. Support the development of school health councils and rigorous school health planning processes (e.g., assess school health policy, create school health council, implement recommended improvements).
4. Establish strong wellness policies (e.g., through legislation or action through the state Board of Education).

Most of us have worried about those extra pounds after over-indulging in sugary and processed foods at some point in life. This is because being overweight does not only affect self-esteem but also causes a myriad of health problems. In recent years, overweight and obesity have become a health concern for most Americans, both adults and children. This presentation focuses on childhood obesity and what can be done at school to prevent childhood obesity based on the ten Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations. According to Sanyaolu et al. (2019), the prevalence of childhood obesity in the United States has increased more than twofold in the last three decades. This is an important topic to explore and understand because childhood obesity increases the risk of developing far-reaching health problems in childhood and adulthood. Children spend most of their time in the school environment, hence the need for school-based prevention strategies.
CDC’s Ten Recommendations and Accompanying Actions
Strategy 1: Coordination and integration of school health-related programs
This strategy involves promoting healthy eating and physical activity in schools through the implementation of appropriate school-based programs (CDC, n.d.). As a school health professional, I would coordinate efforts with various stakeholders such as school nutritionists to create a school meal program with established minimum and maximum calorie intake levels for children in different age groups. As Sanyaolu et al. (2019) posit, excessive calorie intake increases the prevalence of childhood obesity, but this can be prevented through dietary changes and physical activity. I would also ensure that the school kitchen staff are adequately trained on creating healthy foods and healthy portion sizes for children of different ages. Finally, I would also collaborate with physical education teachers to help plan and implement age-appropriate physical activities.
Strategy 2: Use of local and state data in decision-making and policy formulation
This strategy involves using data collected from school-based surveys to allocate resources and make informed decisions on child obesity prevention (CDC, n.d.). I would apply this strategy by ensuring that the schools I serve participate in data collection efforts. Schools should provide data that can then be used as evidence for improvement in childhood obesity prevention. In collaboration with the school nutritionist and physical education teacher, I would also use local and state data to create meal programs that incorporate age-appropriate diet and physical activity. Finally, I would also ensure the continuity of school-based obesity prevention interventions. According to Schroeder et al. (2016), most obesity interventions end when a research study ends. Still, school health professionals can ensure effective interventions remain in place even after the study is completed.
