Roles of Advanced Practice Nurses and State Regulations
Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) have initial education in nursing and are licensed as registered nurses (RN). State Boards of Nursing also govern them. However, the scope of practice of APRNs varies according to state regulations and requirements. As such, APRNs need to understand the various laws, regulations, and requirements that define their scope of practice in their state of practice. This paper develops a personal philosophy and explores educational courses, professional requirements, the application process, and state regulations for APRNs in the State of Maryland. It also discusses APRN roles and prescriptive authority and examines APRNs roles from a global perspective.
Personal Philosophy
As a nurse practitioner (NP), I must align my values and beliefs with the nursing practice. My values and beliefs are respect for human dignity, autonomy, compassion, and seeing an individual as a whole. I also believe in getting the right training to become a competent individual in whatever I aspire to be. This is why I am pursuing education and training as an NP to ensure that I become a competent mental health NP, which is my area of interest.
My philosophy is that I need to incorporate my values and beliefs into my NP practice. Just as I have always used these values and beliefs as an RN, I will use them to provide patient-centered care as a mental health NP. According to the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) (2019), NPs have to meet competency-based standards and accreditation requirements so that they can provide safe, patient-centered care. This is achieved through NP education, which is what I am currently pursuing.
Since I value seeing an individual as a whole, I want to handle my patients as a whole by considering their environmental, spiritual, emotional, and physical factors to ensure I provide patient-centered care that meets various needs of the patient. My philosophy is informed by Virginia Henderson, a nursing theorist who developed the needs theory and believed that nursing activities should be based on human needs (Smith, 2020). Her nursing concept informs my view of a patient as a whole with basic needs (spiritual, physical, emotional) that should be met to promote good health. More specifically, her concept allows me to examine how basic human needs influence mental health.
Educational Courses and Professional Requirements
In the state of Maryland, APRNs receive their certification from the Maryland Board of Nursing (Maryland Board of Nursing (MBON), 2020). To become an APRN, one must be a licensed RN in Maryland or a compact state. In terms of education, one must complete a graduate-level APRN program from a school that has received approval from the Maryland Board of Nursing. The approved program must offer education in three key areas, namely: advanced health assessment, advanced pharmacology, and advanced physiology/pathophysiology (MBON, 2020). In addition, the graduate-level APRN program must result in either a master's degree certificate or a post-masters certificate. After completing the graduate program, an individual ...
