Nursing has become one of the largest professions in the world, and as such, nurses have the potential to influence policy and politics on a global scale. When nurses influence the politics that improve the delivery of healthcare, they are ultimately advocating for their patients. Hence, policy-making has become an increasingly popular term among nurses as they recognize a moral and professional obligation to be engaged in healthcare legislation.
To Prepare:
• Revisit the Congress.gov website provided in the Resources and consider the role of RNs and APRNs in policy-making.
• Reflect on potential opportunities that may exist for RNs and APRNs to participate in the policy-making process.
Post an explanation of at least two opportunities that exist for RNs and APRNs to actively participate in policy-making. Explain some of the challenges that these opportunities may present and describe how you might overcome these challenges. Finally, recommend two strategies you might make to better advocate for or communicate the existence of these opportunities to participate in policy-making. Be specific and provide examples.

Nursing is one of those huge health care professions, plays an important role in policymaking. Based on a report by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, there approximately 4 million registered nurses in America. Nurses spend most of their time dealing with patients, and so they are well familiar with people’s needs, and these make them good advocates for public policymaking (Bienemy, 2018). Nurses can influence health policies at various levels, such as engaging in projects that aim at quality improvement and attending local meetings to share their expertise and experience. At national levels, nurses can participate in policymaking by writing to the political representatives and advising on emerging health issues.
There exist different opportunities that nurses can use to participate in policymaking. At a national level, nurses can directly participate in policymaking by joining health organizations. Through these organizations, nurses can bring their issues and opinions forward for policymaking. Nurses can also participate in policymaking by directly writing regarding healthcare issues to those representing them at state levels (Kooienga & Wilkinson, 2020). Nurses can run for state offices to directly participate in policymaking. The second opportunity available for nurses to participate in policymaking is joining professional bodies such as the Emergency Nurses Association and the American Nurses Association.
