You enter C.J.'s room and find her crying. She states, "I can't believe I have cancer." What actions would you take?
When a friend, loved one, or client receives a cancer diagnosis, it is crucial to show concern and care despite the difficulty in consoling them. In the scenario, I would let them lead the conversation without interrupting. Even when their whining causes irritation, I would not change the subject but rather state how I feel to eliminate any awkwardness. I will also promise to care for and give them a listening ear anytime they undergo an emotional breakdown.
C.J. asks you what treatments and procedures she will most likely experience. How do you respond to her?
First, allow the patient to undergo grief stages after the diagnosis, such as denial, bargaining, anger, distress, and acceptance. After that, let the patient understand the stages of cancer and treatment methods available depending on the type of cancer and stage (Han et al., 2017). The commonly used treatments include chemotherapy, surgical removal of the tumors, and radiation to kill the cancer cells. The treatment plans vary from one patient to another. Some may opt to stay at the hospice while receiving medication, while some may prefer making trips to the hospice for chemotherapy and radiation (Candidi et al., 2018). During the response, a medical professional should be positive and show them that the chances of recovering are high if they adhere to their medical instructions. I will also mention the potential side effects of the treatment options to ensure the patient selects the best medical treatment.
