DEA is mandated to license and certify any nursing practitioner certified by the board to prescribe and control substances. DEA collaborates with nurse practitioners to ensure that no drug substances are diverted and used for illicit purposes. The DEA also works with law enforcement authorities and the licensing board to ensure that the controlled drugs are distributed, prescribed, and administered for the right medical reasons (Drug Enforcement Administration, n.d.).
The Drug Enforcement Administration body can investigate any practitioner if suspected of breaking the code of conduct on substance control. The first step in such an instance is to withdraw the nursing practitioner's operating license and request them to surrender the DEA registration. Any unusual behavior in surrendering the DEA registration number may prompt corrective actions like a criminal and civil actions (Drug Enforcement Administration, n.d.). This would help to tame the rogue practitioner from breaking the code of conduct.
The PMNHP responsibilities when having a DEA number
It is crucial to prescribing drugs rightly to enhance patient care. The prescription should always follow the guidelines outlined by the authority regulating substance administration, prescription, and distribution. The DEA number defines the boundaries that a nursing practitioner operates. As a nursing practitioner, it is good to help the pharmacist prescribe drugs and be consulted for clarifications. This ensures that drugs are used correctly. DEA number ensures that practitioners do not divert drugs for personal benefits ad for illegal use. Wrong prescriptions may lead to underdose or overdose, which may be dangerous to human health. Suspicious drug use should be reported to DEA's office for immediate action (Buppert, 2020).
