Abstract
The Canadian health care system is purposed to promote mental health and help people live meaningful and enjoyable lives. The main goal for Canadian nurses, as emphasized in the assigned literature, is achieving a state of optimum mental health. Mental health involves a balance in all aspects of one’s life, that is, physical, social, economic, and mental. Canadian nurses contribute significantly to the achievement of these goals. The focus of this paper is to discuss the different sociological barriers that psychiatric mental health nursing (PMHN) experience while providing mental health care at varying levels, and suggest changes that can be made to alleviate these sociological barriers.
 
Introduction
Everyone should be in a state of optimum well-being and mental health. There is a shortage of opportunities for Canadians who experience mental health issues to achieve optimal mental health. This shortage of opportunities requires the involvement of key stakeholders such as entities interested in responding to persons with mental health disorders, to determine ways of advancing the provision of mental health care. In Canada, the largest group of health care workers consists of nurses, and nurses whose sole purpose is providing mental health care are vital stakeholders when it comes to meeting the mental health care needs of Canadians. Thus, Canadian nurses can help support a national mental health strategy.
 
The difference between the organization of PMHN and education between western provinces and Canada as a whole has connections with past events and intersects with professionalization, gender, and the current organizational structure. Analyzing nursing from a historical perspective may foster further studies that may be beneficial to nursing knowledge by acquiring new perspectives and learning from previous approaches.
Psychiatric mental health nursing (PMHN), have been experiencing different barriers such as sociological, gendered, organizational, and individual issues. Some of the sociological issues include stress levels, individual, organizational, and systemic barriers.
Substantial evidence shows that nurses are stressed out, and this affects their mental health. In the nursing profession, most members are women, and the ramifications for productivity and health of Canadians are especially unsettling if nurses are experiencing a reduced quality of work life. As the backbone of healthcare systems, nurses are required to be stress-free and in a stable mental state to perform their day-to-day activities.
As advised by CNA, nurses must practice self-care. Handling families and individuals that experience mental illness can drain emotional, mental, and physical energy. Thus, nurses are advised to get in the habit of developing self-care practices that alleviate the stress that comes from handling mentally ill patients (CNA, 1992).
