Nowadays, health care providers are largely guided by evidence-based practice. The information gathered from the research is also used to create guidelines for quality control and improvement in every health institution (Lampe et al, 2019). Due to these reasons, it is important to differentiate between research and quality improvement.
Research is a systematized area of expertise that deals with the discovery of new knowledge in any field. Information is gathered through data collection through the observation of the subjects or by calculating the results of the data from quantitative research. In clinical practice, the results are not utilized haphazardly because the subjects are vulnerable. However, with further research on the subject matter, the results of every research will be added and holistically analyzed to conclude certainty. After achieving certainty, the results can now be applied to vulnerable populations (Haesebaert et al, 2018).
By contrast, quality improvement evaluates the norms in health care and their effects on patient care outcomes. In the United States, the Instituted of Medicine is responsible for briefing and evaluating the quality of health care nationwide. This organization specifies that quality in health care is directly correlated to the quality of health services. Moreover, improved quality of health services is directly correlated to the efficiency of health care delivery (Haesebaert et al, 2018).
The quality improvement also provides a systematic way to collect data to achieve a health care breakthrough since the results of one research are utilized as a data for the next one, leading to an advancement in health care knowledge.
