In this paper, a summary of two research articles, one qualitative and one quantitative, will be provided. The two articles provide information about change-of-shift handovers. Then, the differences and similarities between the two articles will be discussed.
Summary of Qualitative Article
In their study, Tobiano, Whitty, Bucknall, and Chaboyer (2017) identified the nursing end of shift reports as an instrumental aspect of patient care continuity and safety. Accordingly, their study identified bedside handovers during the change of shift as the research problem. The purpose of their study was to examine the factors that nurses recognize as barriers to bedside handoffs.
The researchers employed a qualitative research method in their study. Specifically, participants in the cross-sectional survey were asked open-ended questions, which allowed them to provide their opinion on what they considered as barriers to bedside handoffs. A sample of 200 registered nurses in a private hospital in Victoria and a public hospital in Queensland, Australia, was selected.
The study’s results revealed that nurses recognized three key barriers. One, the sensitive nature of patient information hindered bedside handovers because other people in the room, such as family members and other patients, could hear the information.
Two, interferences, such as noise and family/patient participation during the handover hindered bedside handovers. Three, patient and nurse characteristics during the shift change hindered bedside hand-offs. In conclusion, the researchers recommended continuous nurse education on how to handle sensitive information and patient preparation for handoffs as strategies that would improve bedside handovers.
