This is quantitative research about Type 2 diabetes self-management examines challenges facing older African-American women in the low-income category (Day, 2017). The author used a cross-sectional correlational research approach to examine both dependent and independent variables. In this case, the variables included food security and depression as an independent factor and diabetes control as a dependent factor. Correlation research approaches were divided into three classes that are explanatory, predictive and model testing. In the research, excessive body mass index was a covariate. One of the research questions was the effect of household food challenges on self-management of diabetes in low-income older African-American women, which is a significant factor for obesity as per their BMI (Day, 2017). One of the hypotheses relating to the above research question indicated that lack of enough household food does not affect diabetes self-management practices in African American older women with low income.
The research target sample population comprises 10,610 African American women at the age of 50 and above with an income of $25,000 or less suffering from Type 2 diabetes (Day, 2017). Also, the study population had depression and food insecurity challenges. The study’s sampling frame was the 2015 BRFSS data compilation, which did not include the participants’ names. The course setting involved the use of a dataset from the BRFSS data site comprising of African American women at the age of 50, suffering from type 2 diabetes and low-income margins. The study focused mainly on determining the effect of food security and depression on the self-care strategies relating to diabetes. The researchers also looked into depression mediated food insecurity and diabetes management approaches as a high-risk factor for the development of type 2 diabetes.
