Diabetes is among the leading causes of stroke and heart disease among adults. Death rates that are occasioned that occur from heart disease and risk of developing stroke is higher in adults with diabetes than those who do not have diabetes that. In the Unites States, approximately 67% of diabetic adult reporting having high blood pressure and increased cholesterol levels with those who smoke having a higher risk of stroke and heart disease (National Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 2012).
Three types of diabetes exist that are; type 1, 2, and gestational diabetes. Type 1 is common among young adults and children and accounts for 5% of all diabetes. Type 2 is common among the adults and accounts for 95% of diabetes. Finally, gestational diabetes is common among women and occurs in pregnancy. This occurs in 2%-10% of pregnant women and this predisposes the children in the womb with a significantly high risk of developing type-2 diabetes (National Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 2012).
Type 1 diabetes that is type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1) occurs due to the inability of the body to produce insulin. Daily injection of insulin aimed at maintaining glycemic control is the main form of treatment. Insulin production is hampered as the body destroys pancreatic cells that were responsible for the production of insulin. The CDC approximates that around 15,000 youth are diagnosed with diabetes on a yearly basis. To manage the disease, blood-glucose levels should be regularly checked, diet constantly monitored, and regular exercises undertaken (National Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 2012).
