The Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS) is a credential at the state level for advanced nutritional specialists when they have earned an advanced degree (graduate or doctorate). CNS focuses on science-based advanced level of medical therapy and education mainly in the private sector or facilities. The Certified Clinical Nutritionist (CCN) denotes credential at the national level given to a professional who has obtained a bachelor’s degree in clinical nutrition or when one has a master’s degree in the area of human nutrition. A Certified Nutritional Consultant (CNC) credential is offered at the professional level by the AANC once an individual completes an open book exam. Registered Dietician (RD) refers to a food and dietary professional after acquiring a baccalaureate degree through a program acknowledged by Dietetics’ Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) (Description of Degrees/Credentials, 2015).
Credentials tell the public that the individual is a qualified professional that is licensed and certified to perform specific duties within a given field. This gives the public confidence that they are dealing with someone who understands his/her roles and responsibilities and skilled to perform them. These credentials give a professional credibility in their area of work and so ensures that the public build trust with the services one is expected to offer. Further, the credentials enhance the reputation of the individual and the public perception of such a person is positive (Metacred, 2016). Credentials, therefore, give the public assurance that one possesses the needed skills and ability to operate competently.
