Relapse is a process or dynamic process where an individual reuses drugs or alcohol after a period of abstinence or sobriety (Washton & Zweben, 2011). When recovering addicts identify or warning signs associated with relapse, it is easier to make changes and prevent relapse. When relapse occurs, it is usually associated with behaviors that are contraindicated in treatment t, but relapse prevention training can influence a behavior change to reduce and prevent relapse (Weinstock et al., 2017). Teaching, training, and empowering clients are essential to maintaining relapse prevention and change.
Relapse prevention is an essential step in therapy for people with addiction problems. It is necessary to identify high-risk situations, training in coping skills, and even influence a change in thoughts associated with substance use. Education is necessary for relapse prevention and can potentially change thinking, behavior patterns, and attitudes, and I would promote education to impart relapse prevention strategies.
