Community health strives to eliminate the predisposing factors for chronic health conditions and communicable diseases in a particular set of people in cities, towns, or rural areas where the majority of the people are marginalized or do not have proper access to primary health facilities. Therefore, a community health nurse is responsible for gauging and analyzing the health needs of the community, advocating awareness and understanding of the community members’ divergence, identifying existing resources, managing healthcare, and practicing evidence-based techniques (Arkansas State University, 2017).
In a community, there are always biases and stereotypes which the community health nurse is obligated to address. Prejudices exist due to an implicit relationship unconsciously, subconsciously, irrepressibly, or irrationally, that may manipulate a person’s opinion, thereby evaluating a subject negatively and consequently aggravating the subject’s frailty. These prejudices may be due to sex, gender (men, women, LGBTQ), racial minority, culture, social status, and/or the disease itself (FitzGerald & Hurst, 2017). By contrast, a stereotype is the confrontation of these prejudices (Aronson, Burgess, Phelan, & Juarez, 2013).
To address these, the three phases of health disparities research—detection, understanding, and elimination, should be considered. First, detection spans health disparities, gaps in high-quality care, disparities in patient preference, and defining vulnerable populations. Second, understanding health disparities extend from the vulnerable to non-vulnerable populations and the differences in the effects of interventions to these groups. Last, reducing or eliminating disparities include developing interventions, evaluation, implementation and translation, and research-community collaboration (Killbourne et al, 2006). Also, Byrne & Tanesini (2015) suggest that the reduction or elimination of health disparities is not only through an increased awareness but more constant exposure with constructive criticism and positive contemplation to these biases. Also, A focused immersion with the minority groups and counter-stereotypical provocations are deemed to be helpful.
