Quality Improvement Initiative to Reduce Mortality and Morbidity in the ICU
Purpose of the Project
This proposed project is dubbed Keystone intensive care unit (ICU) Project. The United States Institute of Medicine has previously underscored the major problem of patient safety and the significance of using evidence-based quality improvement initiatives for reducing adverse events (Lipitz-Snyderman et al., 2013). Quality improvement initiatives aimed at decreasing adverse events could lead to a considerable impact on other crucial outcomes, for instance, length of stay at the hospital, morbidity, and mortality (Van der Voort, 2017). The purpose of this project is to decrease the rate of mortality and morbidity in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit and to improve patient safety. The project seeks to address the problem of patient safety in the healthcare organization and decrease adverse events. It is worth mentioning that adverse events like ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) and catheter-related bloodstream infections are associated with increased length of hospital stay, increased patient mortality, and increased patient morbidity (Chelluri, 2017).
The proposed Keystone ICU Project will adopt a broad approach to improve the safety of patients. The approach includes improving communication between healthcare professionals, promoting a culture of safety, as well as executing evidence-based practices (EBPs) for reducing the rates of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) and catheter-related bloodstream infections. To prevent VAP, the evidence-based interventions that would be utilized include a mechanical ventilator bundle that comprises using daily interruption of sedation infusions, semirecumbent positioning, as well as prophylaxis for deep venous thrombosis and peptic ulcer disease. The EBP interventions that would be used to prevent catheter-related bloodstream infections include the following: getting rid of needless catheters, avoiding the femoral site when inserting a catheter, promoting proper handwashing, skin antisepsis with chlorhexidine, and full barrier precautions. These interventions have been shown to improve patient safety and decrease the rates of infections in ICUs (Pronovost et al., 2014).
Target Population or Audience
For this project, the target audience consists of the top administrators and executives at the hospital. They are the target audience because their approval would be needed for the project to be implemented in their healthcare organization. It will be important to please them because if they are not happy with the project, then it cannot be implemented. To ensure the success of the project, their input and contribution would be sought. The hospital’s senior executives would be consulted regularly throughout project execution.
Benefits of the Project
The proposed project has some benefits. The key benefits are as follows:
Improved patient safety and patient outcome
The decrease in patients’ length of stay at the hospital
Reduced incidences of adverse events such as VAP and catheter-related bloodstream infections.
The red...
