Briefing of Prominent Themes
In the field of nursing research, much prominence is given towards the use of quantitative methods for the analysis of different situations. This is because the analysis of numbers increases the objectivity of the results, as long as the steps for conducting such is done right. However, qualitative research also has its advantages. Analysis of particular things through careful evaluation (i.e., in-depth interviews) could help in shedding light towards specific issues that quantitative research cannot identify, or even complement the use of numbers by providing more precise explanations. In this article, one type of qualitative research is put into focus – that is Coding. Coding is defined as “the identification of topics, issues, similarities, and differences that are revealed through the participants’ narratives and interpreted by the researcher” (Sutton & Austin, 2015). In other words, this is the organizing, labeling, and analysis of recurring information in the texts (or transcriptions) that allows an even more objective approach within a qualitative study. In this qualitative study, the process of coding was used to organized data based on the topic of interests. The main aim of this study is to determine what the respondents can consider as “pet peeves” in the courses that they have taken. A pet peeve is only defined as something that is annoying for simplicity.
During the study, most of the students were asked to choose from a list of twenty-one (21) codes of the different pet peeves that they are provided with. Since the sample population consists of 10 students (pertaining to each of the rows) who were all asked to write at least three (3) pet peeves that they consider highly annoying, then it was expected that there would be about 30 comments. However, the list from the table above would show that only 3 answered all of the comments asked, which resulted in only 21 comments all in all.
