Introduction
The presence of nursing shortage within various healthcare centers globally has existed since the occurrence of World War II; therefore, it cannot be considered as a modern phenomenon. Although there are various reasons that results to nursing shortage but some of the main causes has found by Sally (2014) include decline in the number of nursing students joining nursing schools, lack of materials and resources to facilitate better and effective nursing researches within nursing schools and healthcare centers. Others are poor working conditions, aging workforce within nursing and complexity of healthcare technological advancement. Similarly, nursing sector is also faced by rapid nurse turnover which exist due to poor management, an un-conducive working environment and lack of proper employees' motivation practices among others (Huai-Ting et al, 2014). Therefore, in order for the above problems to be diminished, leaders within nursing sector should ensure that they create better working environment, they use technology as a nursing training tool and create more nursing employment so as to attract many nursing applicants. Consequently, based on the current problem of nursing shortage and nurse turnover, this paper provides various ways through which nursing leaders can ensure that the above problems are eradicated.
Approaches to Nursing Shortage by Nursing Leaders
Following high demand for quality and timely medication to patients that require nursing services, it is important for solutions to nursing shortage to be a major priority to nursing leaders. Getting solutions to nursing shortage should be given a priority because it will help in solving various challenges that patients face as a result of the problem. According to Sally (2014), the presence of nursing shortage impacts patients in various. For instance, patients are unable to get timely medical attention due to high patients' turnout as compared to the numbers of nurses that offer these services. Apart from untimely medication, another way through which patients are impacted due to nursing shortage is through getting poor medication, which results because of lack of nursing facilities. Additionally, patients are forced to pay more for their medication through bribery for them to be attended to (Ann et al, 2014).
Similarly, facing the problem of nursing has also resulted to massive injuries and deaths of many patients. Therefore, nursing leaders need to come up with better and effective plans that would ensure that the problem of nursing shortage is dealt with completely. For instance, nursing leaders should push for the development of public and private partnership as encouraged by Sally (2014). Developing of public and private partnership is important because it will lead to the implementing programs that will ensure nursing classes, students and nursing faculties are increased within the nursing fraternity (Mahmud et al, 2014).
