The success and prosperity of a generation rely on sound health system. It is perhaps in the backdrop of this reality that when world leaders once gathered to chart way forward for the humanity, maternal health became one of the agenda that topped the list of the so called Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The focus of goal number five was to reduce maternal mortality and achieve universal access to reproductive healthcare (Reghunath, 2019). Maternal health is also at the center of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), which requires reduction of maternal mortality ratio to 70 per 100,000 live births by the year 2030. These imperatives illustrate the degree of necessity of maternal healthcare especial during labor and delivery. It places obligation on us as key stakeholder in the health sector to formulate and implement initiatives that helps in labor and delivery quality improvement. It is in the backdrop of this reality and the critical role that we play in provision of maternal health that makes Labor and Delivery Quality Improvement (LDQI) a sound initiative.
The Purpose of the Initiative
The first and major purpose of this program is to reduce maternal and newborn mortality, morbidity and stillbirth. Obstetric violence is one of the causes of still birth, maternal and newborn mortality. Studies indicate that US health institutions and providers have been accused of bullying and coercion of pregnant women during birth which in have in some cases resulted to stillbirth, maternal or newborn mortality (Diaz-Tello, 2016). It is for this reason midwives are advised not to be unfriendly with their patients during this period to avoid stillbirth and other related risks.
The second purpose LDQI initiative is to improve quality of care during the delivery and post-partum care and lastly to enhance satisfaction and provide respectful maternity care. The expectations of every pregnant woman is to be well looked after by their midwife and at the same time remain involved and have control of their birth process (Jha, et al., 2019). When a pregnant woman gets into maternity or labor room, the least they expect is to be attended to professionally and treated respectful by their midwives care providers.
Targeted Audience
This program targets healthcare providers especially those working in delivery rooms and Labor Theatres (OT). It also targets nursing staff dealing with maternal healthcare. It is noteworthy that maternal healthcare does not start and end in labor and/or delivery room. It continues thereafter birth until such a time after full recovery. These are the major stakeholders at the center of improvement of maternal healthcare and access to reproductive health. The program also implicitly targets its potential and intended beneficiaries. These include pregnant women especially during the intrapartum period.
