Introduction
This paper seeks to paraphrase an interview that was conducted with T.J Hammond with the aim of providing insights from her response to some of the questions that relate to her personal views and perceptions in regard to professional identity and stewardship. I had the opportunity to interview the participant who is a nurse in one of the medical-surgical units within my community, specializing in neurological patients within the medical facility.
The interview was conducted through a phone within a relative amount of time, thus comprising of four questions within a period of twenty minutes. I was confident that the respondent’s interview who is a registered nurse (RN) within the healthcare field was adequate to meet the needs of this paper, an aspect that is prevalent in what leadership means to her professional development and the manner in which this affects her career and practice.
The Practitioners Role as a Health Care Team Member
T.J Hammond’s role as a registered nurse within one of the facilities in my community remains in providing safe and effective patient care to patients who visit the medical facility. Her roles include providing the patients who visit the facility with medical administration, educating the patients and their family members on safe practices, active listening to the patient's concerns, and actively assisting the patients in conducting activities that are health related in their daily lives (T.J Hammond, 2016).
On the other hand, as an RN, she has the obligation to ensure that collaborations are initiated with other team members that include speech, physicians, and occupational therapists in providing care to patients. She is also culpable of coaching nurses as they engage in activities aimed at feeding, bathing, and taking vitals among patients, an aspect that clearly depicts the fact that her largest role remains in advocating for her patient's needs.
According to Hammond, her first contact with patients in a case where a problem or issue is presented remains in finding solutions or getting assistance from other practitioners with the aim of meeting the needs of the patients. Hammond alludes to the fact that:
Nurses need to understand the need to advocate for the needs of their patients through supporting them and providing them with quality nursing care, an aspect that depicts the essence of professionalism in nursing practice.
(T.J Hammond, 2016)
Providing quality nursing care to patients is one of the essential elements that define professionalism in nursing. In this case, it is essential to echo the views of Happell (2014) who believes that nursing is a diverse profession that holds a wider array of jobs thus providing numerous avenues in developing careers (pp.100). Each setting that is held by nurses’ remains an opportunity in shaping their views of their leadership skills within the nursing profession. However, floor nurses hold a different philosophy than emergency department nurses, as the aspect that results in the creation of mosaic nursing.
