Strong communication skills, efficiency, fast responsiveness in offering health care services, having empathy, having conflict resolution abilities, and having collegial trust are some of the traits one needs to be a good leader. Even though the young doctors and nurses have the technical know-how, they rarely receive clinical leadership training. With clinical leadership knowledge, there is a high and optimistic chance of ensuring quality care, patient safety and the interpersonal teamwork in the stressful and busy healthcare sector (Page, 2004). Therefore, nurses should strive to gain the above qualities to manage to work in the busy and stressful environment with the patients’ needs and safety being the priority.
A leader at the bedside
Nurses have had initiatives that could facilitate an improvement in the quality, level of access, and growth in outcome through paying attention to the prevention, chronic disease management, primary care, and wellness of the patient. To pass all this along to the patients, especially those in hospital beds a nurse must have excellent communication skills. As the leader at the bedside, they have to choose the words they use to pass a message along to the patient carefully. Without the correct communication skills, it can lead to disasters when passing information that is sensitive to the patient. Secondly, as a leader at the bedside, the nurses must be efficient in offering their services to the patient. Efficiency is of paramount importance while handling patients since their lives depend on the effectiveness of all the parties involved. For instance, the nurse should ensure that they render service to their patients in time and correctly.
Furthermore, as a leader at the bedside, a nurse ought to create congenital trust with their patients. The nurse should ensure that the patients are ready to share with them any information about their progress or history. The trust will, therefore, help the nurses gain vital information about the patient that makes treating them easier. Nurses should be empathetic to be good leaders at the bedside. Most nurses are taught to be empathetic at all times and to all patients to offer the best quality of service to the patient (Page, 2004). Moreover, with empathy, the nurses place themselves under the patients’ shoes, managing to offer quality health care to the patient.
