Medical-Surgical Nursing (MSN) is one of the largest nursing specialities in the United States and even in other countries. The members deliver care to those who have undergone a medical-surgical procedure, particularly in the adult population. They are also responsible for assessing those who are recovering from surgery. Generally, MSNs are knowledgeable of a systematic process of prioritization, assessment, and communication with patients and to other departments, mostly because surgical cases are often comprised of multiple specialities CITATION AMSnd \l 13321 (AMSN, 2020).
Significance to the Specialty
AMSN advocates for policy changes to protect its members. Some of their agenda include safe staffing, reinforcing the social determinants of health, nurse workforce development, leadership in MSN, safe workplace, mutual professional respect, and saving people from the opioid crisis.
