Evans-Cowley, J. S. (2010). Planning in the age of Facebook. The role of social networking in planning process, 75, 407–420.
This investigative article by Evans-Cowley (2010) aims at demonstrating a correlation between digital communities, such as Facebook groups, and their ability to organize the public around place-based issues. Evans-Cowley, who is a Provost and Professor in Urban and Regional Science at the Texas A&M University, USA, describes how increasing the quality of interactions with their specific social networks in their online communities potentially increases the rate of participation in socially place-based issues. She suggests that, while these digital communities attract fairly large groups of online members, the group administrators and the planners reported minimal influence on the planning process.
Changing the quality of interaction within the social networks by either increasing or decreasing it potentially affects the planning efforts. As a result, the members of the digital communities primarily oppose development projects. Evans-Cowley concludes that appealing to the digital community’s collective sense of intimacy appeals to the public and enables planners to make deeper connections with their followers, thus encouraging deeper interaction. This article was based on a review of social networking groups, a survey of group administrators, and a survey of local government planning departments. It contains references to other academic sources, and primary data research from group administrators and local government planning departments. It presents a comprehensive literature review on the effects of social media groups on community-based engagements.
The article will be used in my research to describe the effect of digital communities in helping address business challenges that may arise in different societies. It will help understand the relationship between engagement levels between group administrators and their members, and its impact on the members on effecting change based on subjects contained in the groups that exist on Facebook, my social media of choice.
