Artificial Intelligence (AI) and related technologies are a collection of technologies that uses computer algorithms to emulate the cognitive conditions of human beings (Davenport & Kalakota, 2019). These technologies are used in specific sectors of society and are also being applied to healthcare institutions to assist administrative processes and patient care. In the article of Davenport and Kalakota (2019), they enumerated the different types of AI that are relevant in healthcare, which include machine learning, natural language processing, rule-based expert systems, physical robots, and robotic process automation. Additionally, the article describes the AI’s potential benefits as well as potential failures and ethical issues in using these technologies.
Machine learning is an application of AI to use statistical techniques and integration of data, where the AI can “learn” from the models of data they gathered and improve automatically without additional programming (Davenport & Kalakota, 2019, p. 94). In healthcare, machine learning is used to predict the necessary treatments for the patient's disease by integrating different attributes. This technology can raise the precision level of the treatment and the overall health improvement of the patient. One common application is the recognition and treatment of cancerous lesions in radiology images (Davenport & Kalakota, 2019, p. 94).
Natural language processing (NLP) is an AI commonly applied in speech recognition, text analysis, translation, and other language-based application for effective communication. In healthcare, the NLP can be used in automating classification and clinical documentation of patients regardless of race and language use to easily transcribe patient interactions and conversations (Davenport & Kalakota, 2019, p. 95).
