When a disaster happens, several activities take place, including search and rescue and other support services. Crisis incidences may have serious psychological and health impact on the affected individuals and their families (Liou, 2015). According to Liou, (2015), very few schools do not see the need to prepare for or respond to critical incidences. Instead, many schools miss the important elements of addressing the aftermath of disasters and implementing appropriate interventions within specific periods for the affected individuals (Liou, 2015).
School only concentrates on creating gatherings and memorials after death has occurred. Schools should acknowledge the need for other types of support in the long-term; some school would ignore such events by downplaying the full impact of the incident resulting in confusion among students and staff who struggle with their reactions (Liou, 2015). According to the experience of schools that have implemented long-term interventions shows that implementing preventive measures helps students and other staffs cope effectively with the consequences of a crisis incident. A good crisis plan should include procedures and actions that can be immediately implemented after a crisis occur to ease the impact of the incident (Jacobs & Pfefferbaum, 2015).
Action and support for students and staffs
School management plays critical roles in helping students and staffs cope with the aftermath of any traumatic events. Schools offer immediate interventions like treatment and other interventions specifically to deal with traumatic events through organized sessions. This process is commonly termed as psychological first aid (Jacobs & Pfefferbaum, 2015).
