Falling can be embarrassing, and it is due to the unexpectedness of the event; thus, people take extra caution to avoid falling in public or shy away from telling anyone that they have fallen. Depending on the severity of the fall, an individual is prone to health risks, such a broken bone, brain damage, death, or loss of mobility. There is a great health disparity as falling most of the time affects older people as close to 30% of people aged between 65 years and older fall at least once per year with a further 15% falling twice or more per year. The fall to an older person is twice as lethal to a fall by a younger person as their bodies become more fragile as they grow older. The falls have severe consequences, and, surprisingly, less than half of older patients tell the doctor that a fall is the cause of their injury or if they have had a previous fall in which its effects are now starting to manifest themselves. The results of falls in the elderly constitute 30%-50% minor injuries such as bruises, cuts, and lacerations, while 10% of falls result in major injuries such as intracranial injuries (ICIs), fractures and even death. The health care and delivery system in the united states is run mostly by the private sector, some of which are in it for the money thus they don’t bother to follow up on a patient's illness history. Falling can have adverse effects on the body than just fractures and the doctor needs to know the source of the injury before treating it.
Fractures such as the skull, hip region and ribs have extremely lethal consequences. For instance, skull fracture, caused by blunt force trauma, exposes the patient to the risk of infections if it is a compound fracture, physical, and neurological damage. The hip region is also another region that can be gravely affected by a fracture as the movement of the individual will be hampered. The ball-and-socket joint becomes weakened as an individual grows older; therefore, any form of fall can be detrimental, and the downside is that even if the hip physically heals, they can fail to recover their posture and upright standing. Technology and new medical approaches can hasten the recovery process and make sure that the patient does not suffer from any post complications.
