Week 4 Assignment
Application: Planned Change in a Department or Unit
Health care organizations are continuously immersed in change from the emergence of new policies, to promote quality care and improve patient safety to keeping pace with the rapid growth in knowledge and best practices. Establishing a solid framework for planning and implementing change is a wise move, as it provides a foundation for the extensive coordination that will be needed to successfully facilitate the change.
For this Assignment, you propose a change at the department or unit level and develop a plan for guiding the change effort.
To prepare:
- Review Chapter 8 in the course text. Focus on Kurt Lewin's change theory, and contrast it with other classic change models and strategies.
- Reflect on problems, inefficiencies, and critical issues within a specific department, unit, or area in your organization or one with which you are familiar. Select one issue as a focal point for this assignment, and consider a change that could be made to address the issue.
- Think about how the change would align with the organization's mission, vision, and values as well as relevant professional standards.
- Using one of the change models or strategies discussed in Chapter 8, begin formulating a plan for implementing the change within the department/unit. Outline the steps that you and/or others should follow to facilitate the change effort. Align these steps to the change model or strategy you selected.
- Determine who should be involved in initiating and managing the change. Consider the skills and characteristics that are necessary to facilitate this change effort.
To complete:

- Identify a problem, inefficiency, or issue within a specific department/unit.
- Describe a specific, realistic change that could be made to address the issue.

Human health is imperative for every person. The establishment of health centers and facilities work to ensure that the healthcare of the entire nation is catered for. In many cases, research regarding improvement in the service delivery remains the primary concern. The focus is to give priority to the human life. Dealing with patients is very critical. Health workers have to work extra time beyond the standard operational time to save the life. In so doing, the health workers hold the key roles.
The aim and vision of any health sector are to deliver quality services to the people. Giving of services is done on fair grounds. Besides, the main priority is laid on ensuring that the lives of patients supersede any other activity. Some strategies must be considered to achieve these objectives. Some may be new or an improvement on the existing ones. In this study, technological plan change is discussed. The aim is to ensure that the management of the nursing unit department functions effectively.
Culture identifies any organization with its stakeholders. It varies from one organization to next. At times, the organization's culture work for its benefit. However, there are cases when it becomes a stumbling block to changes anticipated. The same effect is felt in the nursing unit departments. In such cases, change is necessary (Mitchell, 2013). Variations in the organizational management strategies ensure that a strong foundational framework is created that works for the benefit of patients. It ensures that new policies are implemented, improve the care given to patients and ensuring that the facilities and knowledge of the personnel are up to date.
One of the evolving techniques is the technology. A lot of discoveries and innovations have been done in technology that works to improve lifestyle. It is a surprise that old and manual means of technological development still exist in some nursing departments.
As the invention in technology occurs, nurses should also be kept in the course. They should be updated with the new technology through training or recruiting of the qualified personnel in charge of the technology. However, the department should think of incorporating the technician to be part of the nursing staff. Computerization of the activities and functionalities of the nursing department is the real change. As the world goes digital, it calls for organizations to work the same. The nursing department unit is not any difference (Swayne, Duncan & Ginter, 2012).
