The issue of continuous quality improvement and patient satisfaction is very critical in nursing leadership and management. This view follows a realization that; patient satisfaction should be the ultimate goal of all undertakings in nursing leadership and management. It is therefore critical that it is considered in the undertakings of management and leadership in nursing. In the understanding that nursing leaders and managers approach issues in different ways, this paper analysis the stand that is felt to be viable especially in view of theories, principles, skills as well as the roles of the leaders versus the manager. Analysis of the critical issues aims at encouraging continuous quality improvement and patient satisfaction as an observed critical issue in nursing leadership and management.
Expected approach
In consideration of continuous quality improvement and patient satisfaction as a critical issue, nursing leaders and managers are expected to approach the issue with the seriousness it deserves. As a starting point, it is crucial that nursing leaders and managers acknowledge the issue of continuous quality improvement and patient satisfaction as a highly important issue. It is in acknowledgement of its importance that nursing leaders and managers would put in the right efforts to ensure that there is a continued improvement of quality and patient satisfaction at all times. Jubelt, Graham, Maeng et al (2014) note that; after an acknowledgement of importance of the issue, it is expected that nursing leaders and managers would make deliberate efforts in their jurisdictions to ensure that there is a continued quality improvement and patient satisfaction.
Jubelt, Graham, Maeng et al (2014) maintain that; in efforts to ensure a continued quality improvement as well as patient satisfaction, managers should put efforts of ensuring that they mobilize the required resources that are needed. The big issue here is not just to acquire the resources, rather the efforts of ensuring that the resources are used in the best way possible and geared towards ensuring quality improvement and patient satisfaction. For instance, it would not be viable to even think of quality improvement or patient satisfaction in a situation whereby there is no adequate bed capacity or where there is no adequate medicine to be used in treating patients. It is crucial to note that; in most of situations where there have been issues denote low quality or less patient satisfaction emanating from shortage of items or services, such problems do not entirely come from lack of resources, rather it is its mismanagement by the managers.
In advancing towards continued quality improvement and patient satisfaction, it would be crucial for managers to ensure that they get adequate personnel to offer the required services to patients. There cannot be continued quality improvement and patient satisfaction when a health facility does not have enough nurses and doctors for managing patients.
