A child between the ages of 5 and 12 goes through major developmental stages. So, the needs of this school-aged child always differ depending on the child's age and development. These children are said to possess different abilities, interests, and personalities. So, to adequately assess a school-aged child, it is important first to identify the child's age and the typical developmental stages of children that age (Bogale, 2018). Then, the developmental theory will help to explain how one would developmentally assess the child. This paper will focus on assessing children between the ages of 5 to 12 years. Additionally, it will focus on the developmental theories that help this process to be successful.
First, a school-aged child is typically between the ages of 5 to 12 years old. Children typically learn to read and write during this age, and their motor skills are still growing. This development usually happens between the ages of 5 to 7 years. According to the developmental theory, three main developmental stages exist that children go through during this time. These are the sensorimotor, preoperational, and concrete operational stages (Belser, 2017). These stages have different functions in growing children.
The sensorimotor stage is said to last from birth to about two years. During this stage, children learn about the world through their senses and motor skills. The preoperational stage is the second stage, which lasts from about 2 to 7 years old. During this stage, children can learn symbols and language. However, they still have difficulty thinking logically. The third and last stage is a concrete operational stage, which lasts from about 7 to 12 years old. Research shows that children learn to think logically and solve problems during this stage. These developmental stages are important when it comes to the assessment of the child.
