Once an individual qualifies as a pharmacist, he or she is usually faced with a confusing situation entailing a career selection headache. There are however two main lines of work that they join; community and hospital pharmacy. These two have their similarities and differences as its going to be discussed in this paper.
Hospital pharmacy mainly entails the regular and continuous checking of the prescriptions of incoming or outgoing patients. This is broad since it also involves going through records to ensure accuracy in prescriptions, as well as visiting the dispensary to assist in clinical checks. On the other hand, community pharmacy basically focuses on monitoring the accuracy and consistency of prescriptions.
Both community and hospital pharmacy are hands-on when it comes to their practical aspect. However, they differ when it comes to the amount of patient information they are each predisposed with. Whereas hospital pharmacy enables relatively more access to patient information and notes, community pharmacy doesn’t have such a privilege. This therefore calls for the utilization of all the pharmaceutical knowledge to ensure that one gives the most effective prescription at the first time of asking.
