Health Policy Values
Introduction
People hold different views and personal values when it comes to policies such as those touching on important topics such as healthcare. I support the government’s effort in ensuring that all Americans receive healthcare at affordable cost, and through my experiences and bringing up, I have always wanted to see every human enjoy their lives to the fullest. While I hold such beliefs and values, I too have some reservations when it comes to illegal immigrants who have made the national healthcare budget difficult to fund. In this paper, I will describe my personal values and spiritual beliefs and connect how such values have been influenced by my upbringing. Finally, I will attempt to show some of the inconsistencies relative to the alignment of my personal values and beliefs as regards to healthcare policy.
In terms of religion, I will consider myself a Christian with strict values and often curious as regards other religious practices. When it comes to healthcare, I consider patients’ welfare first before any other matters because caring for patients is a noble course towards saving their own lives. I have been skeptic to some religious beliefs that do not serve to protect the lives of patients. Some of these beliefs have been held in history, while others have been abandoned for obvious reasons that they do not serve to care for patients’ lives. For instance, one of the beliefs that women should not receive medical care while in labor pains was widely practiced during the dark ages. The Christians believed that labor pain is a God-given punishment and should therefore be treated as holy (Aziato, Odai & Omenyo, 2016). Today, mothers in labor wards are administered with pain killers so that they may manage pain during labor. Another belief that I am skeptic about is the denial of anemic patients receiving a blood transfusion. It is worrying that other Christian practices still discourage patients in critical conditions from receiving blood that will save their lives in the name of religion.
When it comes to cost, quality, and social issues, I believe that we should assist the less privileged in the society. It is from my Christian values that I have conceived such a notion that we should be responsible in taking care of our neighbors the same way we do to our own lives. Any small favor that we show to our suffering neighbors is counted as a blessing before the eyes of God. However, I don’t believe that people should get a free ride or that those undocumented immigrants should ever be entitled to any form of assistance. The illegal immigrants fail to pay taxes for medical care and this cripples the running of healthcare system in the country. It has been...
