Abstract
The curriculum is all guided learning carried out within or outside schools. Nursing or patient education requires a well-planned curriculum that would bring out better outcomes in nursing practice. Following the trends in the healthcare system and the growing expectations, nursing faculties should establish a new curriculum. However, the process of arriving at the most appropriate curriculum development process is coupled with several issues. This paper provides a better understanding of the problems within curriculum development and its effect on nursing practice. It also points out some strategies that would help resolve these issues for effectiveness in nursing education.
Patient Safety
Shanthi and Angeline (2015) posit that curriculum development streamlines schools’ efforts to bring out better outcomes within and outside education facilities. Nurses need a vast knowledge of how to take care of patients in healthcare facilities. Nursing education should help prepare nurses for their practice, especially when the trends in healthcare systems continue to grow. Curriculum revision, on the other hand, entails adding and deleting certain items in an existing curriculum. Developing an integrated curriculum that has evidence-based concepts would help nursing faculties overcome the challenges facing healthcare systems. Shanthi and Angeline (2015) highlighted that EBP provides nurses with practical methods for improving patients outcomes. Patients would also receive the best care services in the presence of best evidence. EBP is no doubt important in bringing out better healthcare outcomes, especially when the right decisions are made.
Long before EBP was introduced, health professionals depended on the information of experts and that which they taught students. However, this method of relaying information was quite cumbersome. Health professionals should integrate clinical experience and evidence-based knowledge in decision making. Integrating EBP in nursing influences decisions and keep nurses abreast of new medical protocols for better patient care. Documented interventions help nurses during the process of patient recovery. The technique is essential when nurses need an understanding of the risks in healthcare. Hence, with EBP, nurses develop a better care plan for helping ...
