Nursing Practice Standards
The state of New Jersey develops new or revises existing standards of practice at least every five years. The process for establishing nursing standards can be demanding and time-consuming for an organization working with ANA or independently (Mezey et al., 2017). In my state, New Jersey Board of Nursing oversees the development process.
The Process and Entities Involved
The process begins by the NJ Board of Nursing, establishing a task force that creates documents of new standards or revises existing ones. The taskforce may include specialist nurses, RNs, and APRNs, all with specific roles and functions. They typically use the Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice document as a template during the development process as a description of how complex nursing practice is (Maloney, 2016). It contains six standards of practice and an additional nine standards of professional performance. On completion, the board submits it to ANA’s Committee on Nursing Practice Standards and Guidelines that reviews the submission (NDCA & NJBN, 2015). This first review stage checks the document to ensure it meets the criteria ratified by the ANA Congress on Practice and Economics.
